CONDITIONALS
In a conditional sentence, the if clause expresses the condition and the main clause expresses the result of the condition.
I will go to the concert tonight if I have time
main clause if clause
Conditionals may be real or unreal. Real conditionals refer to things that are true or can be true. In a real conditional sentence, the if clause is always in the present tense. The main clause may be in the present tense or the future tense.
Present idea I always take an umbrella if it rains, future idea if the weather is nice next weekend, we will go on a picnic. Unreal conditionals refer to things that are not true or can not be true. I would buy a house if I had enough money. This unreal because it is not true now. The truth is that I don't have enough money so I won't buy a house. Unreal conditionals express present or past ideas. For a present unreal conditional, use a past tense verb in the if clause and would + base form of the verb in the main clause. Could or might can be used in place of would.
If Mary lived in this city, I would see her every weekend . This sentence is unreal because Mary doesn’t really live in this city and I don’t really see her every weekend. In a present unreal conditional, when the main verb is be, always use were; never use was. Robert would enjoy this party if he were here. Unreal conditionals about the past use the past perfect form of the verb in the if clause and would + have + the past participle form of the verb in the main clause. Could or might can be used in place of would. If you had come to the party last week, I would have danced with you. Mary might have gone to work yesterday if she hadn’t been sick
