Anecdote on learning English
Situation:
A young Indonesian who have just learnt English on how to count from one to ten (1 – 10). He is so confident and very proud of his English (even though in fact he just can count from one to ten and few other words of English vocabulary including ‘yes’ and ‘no’. Someday when he is on his great confidence he meet an English speaking people (native speaker of English). So he want to have a small chat with the native speaker. Unfortunately he does not know how to start the conversation. In his confusion he gets a nice idea that he should start the conversation by stumbling his step to the native) so he just go along. Duuuukk…! Ouch…..! He has successfully stumbling his step to the native. It happen to them that the conversation has started.
Indonesian : I am sorry sir!

Native Speaker : I am sorry too.

Indonesian : (thinking, ‘this native speaker must have the wrong idea to ask me to count in English. Let’s see whether you or me would give up’). I am sorry three.
Native Speaker: What are you sorry for?
Indonesian: What are you sorry five?
Native Speaker: Are you sick? (mentally or insane)
Indonesian: Are you seven?
Native Speaker: ???????????????????????
This young Indonesian has failed to differentiate between sounds and recognizing words. In his perception the word too sounds two. And he thinks that this native speaker try to ask him to count. Again he fails to differentiate sounds and recognizing words – for with four and sick with six.
