Actually, I had a plan since last
night to write a story about an experience of being in a Clarion hotel but I
did not do it , as last night when I arrived in my rent room I felt tired
probably because of long journey from a Clarion hotel to my place. As a matter
of fact, I do not really enjoy to write this story in English because I have to
think hard, try to transfer my thought from Indonesian concept to English but I
conclude by my own “how can I see a beautiful landscape from up above if I do
not use many ways of getting myself on top of hill and enjoy the view”.
Everything looks uncomfortable is not really looks inconvenience, but there is
a pleasure in it when awareness greets our mind.
Let me start to tell you about my
story, on 24th of November 2012 I joined the international seminar
“Empowering Local Cultures in Response to Unesco Seven-Dimension Indicator
Suite” in Makassar Clarion Hotel. One of my friends told me that Clarion hotel
is the luxurious hotel. Well is such a nice surprised for me because I think I
will listen to some explanation from the experts of culture at the same time I
am going to spoiled my eyes with the unique design of the hotel.
On my way to go to the hotel, it
was a struggling hehehe why?. The question may appear in your head. It was a
funny one because I did not know where the hotel is?. I went there with friends
of mine from Baubau and we are in Makassar for studying, being a newcomer in
such a big city, Makassar. My friend also had no idea where the location of the
hotel. So as the result we got lost for some minutes, and being so dumbly
looking at each other until one of my friend passed us and called us to follow
them. Actually, my heart was ups and down hahaha when she was riding her bike
and I was at the back, because the way she rode her bike, it looks like a Z
letter, I do not want to grumble but I do appreciate her bravery to ride in
such a crowded road. To be honest, in my town, Baubau, the number of vehicles
is not as many as in Makassar, the significant differences.
My friends and I arrived in the
Clarion hotel, and then we went up to the second floor. In yasmin room, it is
the name of the room that is used for holding such seminar. When I looked confuse to choose where I
should sit, Rahmat came and had a joke to me, he said “,kak Nani sit at the front”. I do enjoy his jokes because he knows
my habit always want to sit at the front. One day when I finish my study I
absolutely remember Rahmat as a very nice friend who always makes me giggle
with his jokes about sitting at the front.
Before, the seminar started, as
usual I took some pictures of my friends and asked one of them to take a
picture of me. I do not care with what people think about my habit of taking
pictures very often. One nice thing when my friends remember me perhaps they
spontaneously say Nani is a miss of gifo (gifo is like a slang means crazy of
taking pictures) hahahaha. Anyway, my habit of taking photos of me and people,
the reason is to capture the moments much more important because when you feel
miss them, so just take a look back to the past through photos, so simple
reason.
I had a small chat with some of
my friends. One of them is Naya. She talked to me about her planning for the
future, her dreams, her ideas and other things. I became a good listener but
sometimes I gave my respond on hers. In the middle of conversation with Naya,
she made me little bit shock because she told me the girl who became a master
of ceremony is Nahla. Nahla is a girl that I have met 7 years ago, at that time
I was hosting an English interactive program on Lawero Radio, a private radio
station in Baubau. Nahla was a listener of the program, she joined the program
through made a phone called and usually I invited her to be the guest for the
English program. At that time, Nahla was in second grade of senior high school
1 in Baubau, she was impressed me a lot of her spirit to learn English in the
past her English is not as good as now. She incredible progress a lot. Her
parents passed away and she struggle for life. I trust that God loves and bless
all, as long as we try hard and pray to God. In Nahla’s case, God works
perfectly in her life.
Nahla, is a young girl with a
high enthusiastic and in my heart I believe one day she turns to be something
and after 7 years, as I have a new number and we lost contact. God made
everything is possible, we meet up in Clarion hotel. She was little running at
me and me as well, it is a very touching meeting as she hugs me tight and said
‘kak Nisyha (Nisyha, is my radio’s name) I miss you so much it’s been 7 years”.
We both so shocking and surprised but we could not talked longer as she being a
hosted in a seminar. She told me she will get married with Korean guy next
year, I am so happy for her. My friends in Pasca told me that Nahla went to
Canada for youth exchange program and she just went back from Korea. Sooner she
will be in Holland for studying. We keep sending messages and make a plan to
meet again on next Tuesday for having lunch in Unhas’s canteen and have a chat.
The story has not finished yet,
after talking to Nahla. I put all my attention to listen to the presenters who
delivered a cultural presentation; Empowering local cultures. Most of the
presenters are professor. It was really interesting I learn so many things from
them. I emphasize on important points: DR. Aminuddin Ram, M.Ed explanained
based on the question from the participant who asked that “do you think
corruption is a culture?”. An answer from Mr. Unding very interesting, he said in
Indonesian “korupsi adalah penyimpangan
budaya dan peradaban karena semua manusia dilahirkan suci”. I tried to
translate into English: “corruption is misbehaving
towards the culture and civilization as human beings are created so saint by
God”. Another presenter, Prof. Mukhlis Paeni, M.A told all the audiences “kebudayaan melewati sekat-sekat perbedaan” . Into English “culture passed the boundary of the
differences”. While Prof. Dr. Moses Usman, M.S elaborated the concept of
ethnology and anthropology in connection with local cultures’s view. I try to
paraphrasing his idea: “when ourselves
conception is Buginese so you will always be a buginese and even you can speak
many languages but you can not speak your local language means you lost your
identity”. I do like his statement, when he said about a pride to be a
Buginese and it makes me talked to my heart: “wherever I go and whatever I do. I die as a Butonese and I proud of
that”.
Relating those ideas above, the
keynote speaker Gaye Wall (University of Otago, New Zealand) presented her idea
by showing as a picture of fish really funny as she connected it with culture.
She asked all the audiences “who can
explain to all of us what is culture?. in 3 minutes will get a present from me”.
Frankly speaking, when she said about the gift it was motivated me to take the
opportunity, I think Skinner’s theory works inside of me hahaha. No need to
think twice I raised up my hand and gave my thought about: what culture is?. 3
minutes I collect all my energy feeling like wanna faint hmmm but I do not
care. And other comments also come from other. I am so thankful to God because
all the audience choose my comment and it means I deserve to get a present.
What a nice present a New Zealand’s calendar for 2013. I think God answers
me, I have a calendar now. I appreciate myself who struggle for a present and
the applause from the people is like a way of celebrating a win hmmm my thought
always busy with an imagination.
The importance of learning
culture according to Gaye Wall is we learn about Multiple affiliations,
multiple identities, biculturalism, multiculturalism, individualism and
collectivism. She also added a statement, which I try to use my own words to
rewrite here as long as human beings life, we can not go away and refuse
pluralism, because pluralism is a unique thing. To make us easier to learn her
concept of idea, she suggested us to read a book “The World is Flat” by Thomas L Friedman.
Hmmm, all things come in my mind
this morning and I can not asked myself not to write this story and not share
with you all. For me in Clarion Hotel yesterday were a story of friends’ jokes,
a funny moment where my friends took lots cakes in their small plate when
coffee break, a photographer who took a picture of me with my lecturers; Ibu
Nasmillah and ibu Etty such a a miracle being in the middle of them, a lovely
shocking surprised met Nahla for 7 years never met up, a celebration of
skinner’s theory within me, a friend who busy to share pens and clarion’s note
books to us as she collected them in a really funny way, my heart shake up and
down of sitting nicely in a bike when a friend of mine rode to Clarion, a
modern rest room, a delicious food, pretending being so educated and elegant
hehehe. All is mixed up in my mind become a story of a nice heart. Knowledge
will always makes me feel thirsty and need to drink again, again, again, again
and again.
Hmmm, hopefully everyday will be
a nice story, I am waiting for a story and always story. I am a friend of my
thoughts for always.
